Group B1A4 has met with a happy occasion. After making a fancy comeback with new song ‘Tried to Walk’, today is also leader Jinyoung’s 22nd birthday. Born 18 November 1991.

Despite not being able to have a comfortable birthday party due to the overlap with their comeback week, Jinyoung gave his distinctive smile and commented that “I’m happy to be able to spend it with fans”.

A: Firstly, I feel that time passes quickly. As I celebrate every birthday each year, I feel that I learn many things. My thoughts have deepened, and I think of the many precious people around me, and B1A4′s dreams.

Q. How do you feel about getting older?

A: I do think that it is sad, but getting older is definitely something positive. I think that I am becoming more mature, and I have become more responsible in leading B1A4. I think those are thoughts that come as we grow older. I’ve become more careful with my actions, and I think a little deeper about things. It’s nice to have deeper thoughts.

Q. What age do you look forward to the most?

A: 23 years old. It’ll be next year, and I feel like we would have accomplished something. That’s why I’m looking forward to it. It is the end of the year, where I move from being 22 years old to 23 years old. Starting from now, I feel like that B1A4 will achieve something good.

Q. Something you hate to hear on your birthday, and something you like to hear?

A: Something I hate to hear would be “Oh, you’re already so old”. When I was in my 10s, I never thought that the 20s would come. But I’m already 23 years old. This feeling is really unique. I would probably feel even more so when I’m in my 30s right? I feel a little sad when I hear that sentence. Something I’d like to hear is “You’ve matured and become more manly”. I feel joyful whenever I hear such things.

Q. What was Jinyoung’s conception dream?

A. My mother dreamt of walking along a street with a beautiful scenery of ume flowers in full bloom. Next to it was a stream with clear water, and in front was a large boulder with a huge tree growing up front within. I remember when I first heard it, it was such a beautiful conception dream that even I was surprised.

Q. The most memorable birthday?

A: Last year’s birthday was the most memorable. Even though the birthdays before were nice too, I spent last year’s with the fans. I was touched by the thought of ‘There are so many people who love me and are congratulating me on my birthday’, and that ‘This is definitely what I live for’. I was really happy.

Q. Are there any special birthday presents?

A: Rather than a present, it was the birthday party last year. It was a new experience to have all the fans sing me a birthday song, I nearly cried back then.

Q. Your birthday falls on comeback week. Is there a birthday present you’ll like to receive?

A: We’d like to show off a different side to B1A4 through this round of promotions, and we’ll work hard to achieve 1st place on music programs. It’ll be nice to do well enough to receive a Bonsang at end of year music award shows.

Q: If you were given a birthday holiday, what do you want to do?

A: Rather than celebrating it grandly, I want to treat the family that I’ve been apart from to a delicious meal. It may be something minor, but I want to spend time talking to my family.

Q: When you were young, what were your birthday wishes? Have they come true?

A: In the past, my wish was to become an entertainer. It was a wish I really hoped for to come true so I wished for it very earnestly. Luckily I became a singer, and my wish has come true. Now I wish for the people around me to be healthy, and to be together. And of course, amidst all that it’ll be nice for B1A4 to do well. Haha.

Q: In 10 years’ time, how will your birthday be like?

A: I want to spend my birthday with all the members while having wine at a luxurious restaurant. I think that even at that time, we will be promoting as B1A4 still.

Q: Is there someone you’d like to thank on your birthday?

A: Firstly, I want to say thank you to the parents who worked hard to give birth to me. As I grow older, there are more people who I am thankful for. As I receive love from the people around me, I feel that I should do well to the people around me too. I will live being thankful to everyone.

CNU: In sporting events. When I was young, I got first in taekwondo and running.

COSMO: I thought we wouldn't be able to meet today since Baro injured his leg. How did you get injured?
Baro: I went on stage for pre-recording and twisted it. I thought I sprained a ligament but after an MRI scan they said it was torn. I don't know if the torn ligament can heal but with all the moving around I think I will have to go for surgery. Looking back, it seems like our members are like a general hospital. Haha.
Sandeul: We are in charge of the legs (T/N: Sandeul has had knee surgery.) Jinyoung hyung has many minor ailments, and Gongchan has had kidney surgery. Oh, now that I see it, CNU hyung is not sick anywhere.
Baro: CNU hyung has very strong self-love. So he cherishes his body well. Haha. But that is a good thing. In our occupation, body management is very important. If I had exercised regularly, I would be able to cope with such a situation well. I used to play soccer and back then I never got injured so badly.

COSMO: We've heard that you'll be holding your concert over 5 days from 7 August till 11 August. Your leg needs to hurry heal then.
Baro. You're right. There are many things I'd like to show this concert, so there are really many things to prepare for. I'm so excited to be able to hold a concert with a live band, something we've always wanted to do. Our first concert was MR, but we're intending to edit all the songs into acoustic versions. It will be on a smaller scale compared to our first concert so I think we'll be able to communicate in a closer way with our fans. 
COSMO: Is there a reason why you wanted to do it with a band?
CNU: Maybe it's because I performed in a band when I was in high school, so there's such a dream. I was the vocalist then, and it was the first of such in our high school. So I've always insisted on it ever since I was a trainee. The members all have a strong dream to stand on stage with a band, making real sound.

COSMO: The members all seem to have a greed towards music that is very unlike others. Isn't it sensitive when it comes to distribution of parts?
Sandeul: Now that we are familiar with each other's voices, it helps us realize which parts are suitable for which member. Even though individual opinions are important, we're not sensitive about it. 
Jinyoung: I think I have to adjust it well. I need to make music that is able to show off the members' voices.

COSMO: We heard that Jinyoung has 13 songs under his name in the copyright association. Where do you get the inspiration for your songs?
Jinyoung: I try hard to read people's thoughts. I look on at people around me with interest. So I am able to tell what a person likes, and what is the trend nowadays. When I observe the members, they all have their own issues regarding music. I think a lot about how I can show those issues off in my music. 

COSMO: We listened to all of B1A4's music. There is really a great variety.
Jinyoung: Even though we have not released many albums, we do try out different genres. We make numerous songs of different genres, and when the time comes we select those that are suitable and recompose it. I don't like to do the same things over, that's cliched. 

COSMO: The lyrics of the songs Jinyoung makes are very relatable. Are they written from experience?
Jinyoung: Some of it is from experience, but to some extent it's my imagination. I think of one song as an episode from a drama. Only so can we express it better on stage. We also make our music video in a style fitting to the lyrics.
Sandeul: The way Jinyoung trained us benefited me very much when I did a musical. When you learn to do a musical, it is important to communicate with the audience the songs and the script. But when I thought about it, it was something I'd been doing all along. So I could understand at a faster pace.
CNU: We all went to watch Sandeul's musical together, and I cried a lot - because I knew how hard he prepared for it. 
Baro: He worked really hard despite the bad condition of his knee. He did really well for a first time, sprouting with energy. 

COSMO: It was about time that you won first place with "What's Happening". You guys cried a lot that day, right?
Baro: That day we went to a fansign event and asked for a favor from the fans to record videos of us saying our acceptance speech. We really wanted to say the names of the people we were thankful for, if we got first place. The members were all in a daze all day long.

COSMO: Did you not expect to get first place?
Baro: We didn't. That day we were really happy just to be nominated, regardless of whether we won or not. Moreover, we were nominated alongside senior Lee Hyori - of course we thought we couldn't win. In the past we were also second place next to senior Psy. For this time to be senior Lee Hyori, we actually thought "why us?". But our name was called out. That was so unexpected that we thought they called someone else. 
Sandeul: I've always had such a yearning to be on an encore stage ever since I was young. And I was finally standing on that stage, it felt so surreal. I found out then, that we have to do our encore stage right after the announcement - and it was so embarrassing because it was a performance we had never done before. The artists who had been first before thanked their fans and threw flowers to them, but we didn't know what to do. We also thought we had to sing the song till the end so despite crying and our voices not coming out, we sang the entire song. Apparently it wasn't necessary.

COSMO: The song this time is like an outfit that fits B1A4 really well. How did you feel when you listened to the song for the first time?
CNU: Everyone agreed that this would be our title song, the moment we listened to it. Jinyoung is well aware of our strengths so he wrote a song that shows them off. We felt that this song would allow us to play on stage. It was a song that was most like us. 

COSMO: Is there anything that has changed since getting first place?
Baro: I felt that this is only the start, and I made a goal to do even better. 

COSMO: Is there anything you want to do when you get even bigger awards?
Baro: In future, I want to say a famous line from my memory. There are a few I have in mind, and I'm going to say them the next chance I have. But I think when our name is called, I won't be able to recall them. Just like how you feel when you shoot a goal during the World Cup. 

COSMO: Could it be because you chose a good group name that you have been doing so well? B1A4 is the abbreviation for ‘Be the one, All for one’ - meaning that 5 members need to come together as 1 to be the best. Did you form the name together?
Baro: As many people know, this name is from how we have 1 member with blood type B and 4 members with blood type A. There were several other nominations - Phoenix, Legend, Ace etc. Amongst all of them, B1A4 seemed to represent us the best. We wanted to find out what people thought of these names, so we wrote them big on the board in the practice room. We wrote 'B1A4' and saw how it looked - it was really pretty.
CNU: Initially A4 was in the front. But pronouncing A4B1 is harder than pronouncing B1A4, so we swopped them around.
Baro: At that time, Jinyoung hyung opened the door of the practice room and went out about 50m - to hear how B1A4 sounds when it's said far away. And then he went 100m further and made us shout. It was alright.
Gongchan: We thought of several situations to hear how people will take to B1A4.

We're enjoying promotions to the point that we lose control because of the overflowing energy everytime we go up on stage.

As we prepared for this album...  Well, as usual B1A4 were very chattyㅋㅋ

We looked back at the promotions for the past 2 years that might seem short but is also long

About what kind of team we'd like to become in future, what music we'd like to do

About how each of us want to live our individual lives in future.

We talked a lot as we prepared the album.

We're always together but the nights that we spend planning and talking are not enough even if we stay up.

Because we know that it is times like these that makes B1A4 even stronger, I think we'll continue to be chatty in future ㅋㅋㅋ

Hmm.. The members and I worried a lot while writing the lyrics of What's Happening.

We wanted to express it as something that is common yet so possible.

Ya say it straight, where are you? Ya you better treat me well, got it?

Such lyrics are words that you may hear from couples when they fight. We wanted to express this in our style without any processing.

And if this situation happened to any of the members... instead of getting angry and turning away,

We would think about old memories and try again even if it hurts or we may break up

We'll think about the situation and maybe forgive the girl.

I guess the girl in the lyrics did not really cheat, but lied to us for a day and went to the club without telling us ㅋㅋ

Maybe one day B1A4 will be relationship pros and become obsessive men?ㅋㅋ

Anyway this round of promotion is even more meaningful because we managed to get 1st place thanks to the love from BANAs.

I gotta say, I am really happy to have gotten 1st place~~ㅋㅋ

I am filled with emotions even when I think about it nowㅋㅋ

The members agreed that the 1st place from this round of promotions is a present from BANAs to tell us not to be tired and to work even harder.

B1A4, male idol group with both skills and looks, has made their comeback. This is May, seeing the aftermath of Cho Yongpil and Psy alongside Lee Hyori, 2PM and Shinhwa's comeback. But B1A4 is not discouraged.

B1A4 came back on the 6th May with their mini album 'What's Happening', their first in 5 months. Their cuteness and charming appearance are in their prime, and their masculinity has doubled as they grow a year older.

To B1A4, they have their own musical color. As expected, songs personally composed and written by the members have been included in the albums, and it is clear that they thought about finding a musical color suited only for them. The narration 'Hey you, better treat me well, got it' in their title song What's Happening was said to have been edited and discussed several times to best bring across the anxious heart of a man who has been urged by his girlfriend.

On a rainy day in the vicinity of Sangamdong, we met with B1A4 right before their first comeback stage and they were very excited. They wore cute polka-dotted outfits, giving off a fresh vibe similar to their debut days.

"The fans have waited for a long time. So we worked even harder to show a better and newer look to us. During this comeback, I felt like we united with the fans. We also felt more fond (of the fans).
