120811 WHAT'S IN MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2012

MAGAZINE/JAPANESE 2012. 8. 11. 19:31

Q. The Japanese version of Sleep Well, Goodnight is a fresh dance song composed by Jinyoung!

Sandeul: We live together in a dormitory. There was a day I was about to go to sleep, when Jinyoung hyung suddenly said “Hey, listen to this!” and woke me up. I was really sleepy then. (laugh) The moment I listened to it I liked it so much I woke all the members up.

Baro: I was really tired, and he woke me up the moment I had just fallen asleep. At first I was going to say “I got it~ I’ll listen to it tomorrow”, but upon listening to it, I liked it so much I started dancing. (laugh)

Jinyoung: He lifted the mood up suddenly.

CNU: We usually have absolute faith in the songs that Jinyoung creates. When I first heard the song, I thought that despite it being very different from what he had created in the past, it was good.

Jinyoung: In reality, I actually hesitated about letting them listen to the song.

Q. Why?

Jinyoung: The chorus is sung in falsetto, hence I thought if it would have been better if I gave it to a female singer instead. But Sandeul’s reaction was so good. I was really glad that everyone said it was good.

Gongchan: I was the only one who did not manage to hear it at the same time with everyone else, but I was more sober than them (because they heard it after getting awoken). I thought it was a really good song. As CNU hyung said, it is of a different style from what he used to do, and hence we decided upon it as the title song for our next single.

Q. The lyrics of the original Korean version were also penned by Jinyoung, and it does show a more matured image compared to as before, with an outlook on the world.

Jinyoung: I guess so. At first I wrote lyrics along the line of dancing together, but it eventually turned out to be about getting rid of a girlfriend and then going to dance.

CNU: The theme of the lyrics is a ‘cute player boy’.

Sandeul: Normal player boys usually enjoy themselves after getting rid of their girlfriends, but for us cute player boys, we give off the feeling that our girlfriends are liberal enough to allow us to go dance.

Jinyoung: Cute player boys who are sorry to their girlfriends for going to play alone.

Q. So the leading character of this song is Jinyoung?

Jinyoung: No no, it is not a personal experience. (laugh) I have never gone to a club before, so most of it is from imagination. It was written with the members in mind. For example, I imagined what Baro would have done, if he was a player boy.

Q. So if you were a player boy who got rid of his girlfriend to go play, where would you go? [T/N: Getting rid here is not a negative meaning, nor does it refer to a break-up. More like temporary separation, for the day etc.)

Jinyoung: There is someplace I’d like to go in the day so I’ll get rid of her in the day. There are many people who cannot ride rollercoasters even though they like it right? I want to go to the amusement park, ride rollercoasters and eat cotton candy.

Sandeul: To a cafe. I’ll order an Americano, turn on my laptop, and give off a vibe that I’m spending time alone… While waiting to meet that somebody.

Baro: You might still be alone even after your coffee is cold. (laugh) I will go to Han River, and eat chicken and drink cola.

CNU: I will devote all my time to the girl I’m dating, as I want to always be with her. After I get rid of my girlfriend and make some personal time, I will watch movies that I did not get to watch.

Baro: I will risk everything for the one woman I give all my heart to.

Jinyoung: Everyone is like that. I too, will never cheat on my girlfriend. I’m worried about not being able to see a girlfriend that I’ve gotten rid of.

Gongchan: If my girlfriend oversleeps, and there is no one who will play with me… I’ll probably go back to sleep too.

Q. How was recording in Japanese like?

Gongchan: It was not our first time recording in Japanese, so we’re more used to it now and are starting to enjoy it.

Baro: Jinyoung hyung did our vocal direction.

Q. We’ve heard that he is surprisingly strict.

Sandeul: I thought that I’d never be allowed out of the recording booth. (laugh) It was absolute hell when we recorded Bling Girl, a song made by Jinyoung hyung, and is also included in our debut Japanese single. I was really scared before we started recording this time, but I managed to understand the demands of hyung a little faster.

Jinyoung: I kept asking for a higher quality, so the recording time extended by a lot. I think I gave the members a lot of difficulties with my “if we sing more, the song will become better” mindset while recording.

Baro: It was hard for him to direct a Japanese song, but I think we perfected the song thanks to him.

Q. The other songs included in this single are cool, strong and electro. Japanese versions of Baby I’m Sorry and So Fine have been included.

Jinyoung: So Fine is a song that has received much love in Korea. I rearranged it for the Japanese version, and added some klaxon sounds. You’ll be able to feel a fresh charm that is different from the Korean version. I believe that upon listening to these 3 songs, listeners will be able to feel how diverse of a group we are.

Q. A song that you would like to listen to before you sleep?

Gongchan: Sung Sikyung‘s 당신은 참… (You Are So…). It is a slow song, and comfortable enough that the moment I put my earphones into my ear, I will fall asleep. It’s really nice to have a voice next to your ear as if it’s whispering to you.

Baro: Justin Bieber‘s Die In Your Arms. The lyrics have absolutely no correlation with sleeping (laugh) But it is a really calming song. It sounds really good in your ears, so please try listening to it before you sleep too.

Sandeul: Kim Dongryul‘s 편지 (Letter). The lyrics speak of an old letter as the theme, and has a back story of revisiting the past. The lyrics are bittersweet. Whenever I cannot fall asleep, the voice in this ballad lulls me to sleep.

CNU: Robin Thicke‘s The Sweetest Love. I’ve always been a fan of his voice. This song has a slight jazz feel to it, and I feel like it’ll be nice to listen to it before sleeping.

Jinyoung: will.i.am‘s This Is Love. Rather than listening to a soft song, I like to listen to something brighter to release the tension. This song is not only upbeat, but it also has a sad feel to it. The arrangement is well done, and do pay attention to the piano sounds and the phrases in the song!

MAGAZINE/JAPANESE 2012. 7. 14. 18:35

ROUND 1: Where would you go on your first date?

CNU: A stroll date. When at the beginning stage of a relationship, it is the time where I want to get to know my girlfriend better! But there is also the possibility that I may get nervous when facing her so the talk may not turn out so well… In order to have a natural conversation, I will just walk leisurely. I like the idea of a stroll date. To watch the scenery while walking would be relaxing.

Sandeul: A bicycle date. The first thing that comes to mind is the scene of riding a couple bicycle that always comes out in movies. I want to go to a park, rent a couple bicycle and ride along the wind. I want to get to know more about my girlfriend through talking to her while riding the bicycle. After exercising, we would go eat something delicious. I want to make sure my girlfriend enjoys it till the end.

Jinyoung: A date while holding hands. We will start with holding hands while walking along a place with beautiful scenery. When we get hungry, I would bring her to a cafe instead of a restaurant, since there are many girls who are uncomfortable with showing the side of them eating on the first date. After having a light meal, we would come out of the shop and I would hold her hand again (laugh). When night falls, I will walk her home. Gentlemanly, right? (laugh)

Baro: A cafe date. We would go to a cafe or restaurant, and have a slow chat. I want to close the gap between our hearts by talking and understanding each other. I would lead in the talk, and create an easy atmosphere. Leave it to me♪ Lastly I will walk her home, and set a promise for our next date and go home! (laugh)

Gongchan: A movie date. Even though it may be very common, but I want to go and watch a movie! Movies are interesting and ladies like movies too… If the movie genre is something that both of us like, wouldn’t it be alright? And after watching it, we can recap and discuss about the nice scenes. That way, the gap between us will become smaller ♪

ROUND 2: It is your girlfriend’s birthday, where would you go for a date?

Gongchan: A romantic candle night. What I want to do is a surprise shocking date. I would set a date on her birthday pretending not to know about it, and bring the jealous her to a restaurant. And when we enter, instead of lights the shop will be lit by candles. In order to celebrate with just the two of us, I would have rented the shop. That’s the best romance right?

Sandeul: I will personally cook for her in a restaurant ♪ I want to do something special for her, so I will personally cook. And it will not be done at home but in a restaurant instead! Instead of the chef, I will show off my culinary skills and enjoy a romantic dinner just both of us alone. After the meal, I will sing a song for my girlfriend at a small stage near the restaurant. Lastly, I will secretly give her something that she wants as a present.

Baro: A surprise party at home! In Korea, it is a tradition to have seaweed soup so I would have it prepared at home while waiting for it. I would tell my girlfriend to first head to my house, and give her my keys. When she enters the room, she will see a table full of birthday dishes! I will then enter with a cake, and make her even more touched.

CNU: A trip to Chuncheon! I want to ride a train and go for a holiday with just the two of us. The recommended place is Chuncheon, about a two hour ride from Seoul. The scenery is pretty, and it is famous for its chicken dishes like dakgalbi. I hope to leave behind our daily lives and make memories that we will never forget forever.

Jinyoung: To be a voluntary worker at my girlfriend’s house for a day ♥ With the heart of wanting to grant all the wishes of my girlfriend on her birthday, I will go to my girlfriend’s house with an apron and a towel, and give her a “One Day Use of Jinyoung” coupon as a present. (laugh) Other than working in the house, I will make seaweed soup for her. If I worked hard enough, lastly we will go out and have a delicious dinner ♪

ROUND 3: It is the reconciliatory date after a fight, where would you go?

Baro: Pretending to be a mascot in an amusement park. How would that be? I will prepare a ticket to the amusement park, and have a friend of my girlfriend give it to her. I will wait for her in the amusement park wearing the mascot outfit. When she arrives, I’ll dance for her and make her laugh. Upon seeing her smiling faces, I will give her roses and remove the outfit. She will be touched at the look of me soaked with perspiration, and will definitely forgive me! (laugh)

Sandeul: To have skinship while watching a horror movie ♥ If I hug my girlfriend who is scared, wouldn’t she be happy? And when the movie ends, my surprise video letter will be shown, and I will apologize through it.

CNU: To release the anger at a baseball park. If she looks like she is still angry… I want to carry out the date at a baseball park. When watching baseball, you raise your voices and cheer the players on right? If we scream it all out at a place where many people are also being loud, wouldn’t all the oppressed frustations in the heart be released? (laugh) I feel that we will naturally become closer again after watching the game together.

Jinyoung: To take it out on me at a boxing gym! I will bring her to a boxing gym and tell her to hit me as she would. (laugh) I think in the midst of her, we will end up bursting out in laughter. At the end of it all, our relationship would have improved and I would want to tightly hug my girlfriend.

When we find out about your date plans, we also learn about your views towards dating.

Baro: Through this revelation, it was interesting to find out about each other’s views towards dating.

Jinyoung: Even so, don’t you think that mine are the best?

Members: Obviously it’s mine that is the best!!

Jinyoung: …I see. (laugh) I recommend the “One Day Use of Jinyoung Coupon”.

CNU: For me, it’ll be the baseball park date. I think that unexpectedly ladies do like baseball. It’s different from usual dates, so it’s really good right?

Sandeul: I recommend the bicycle date. It is really good when you want to communciate naturally.

Baro: As for me, it’ll be the reconciliatory date in the amusement park. I think that it is a fail-proof plan for reconciliation!!

Gongchan: I go for the candlelight dinner. I think it will be very touching.

Jinyoung: But of course, there are also plans that are a little more rash. (laugh) But Baro, for your plans of holding a party at home! Do you plan to do it in our dormitory?

Baro: Yes. I’m sorry, but I was thinking about making everyone stay out for the day. (laugh)

Sandeul: (immediately) No way!!!!!! I’m going to sleep on my bed!! (laugh)

CNU: I’m going to eat the food that Baro made too. (laugh)

Jinyoung: And for Sandeul’s plan of borrowing out a restaurant’s kitchen to cook. How do you exactly plan to do that~? (laugh)

Members: Ah that’s right, euhahahahaha~!

Baro: However as of right now, we’re right at the gate before our Japanese debut. So instead of dates, it’ll be our music promotions. The rap parts of our debut song Beautiful Target were made by me and CNU hyung. It’s a song that we worked hard to make sure that the fans could sing along (by searching the dictionary for vocabulary) and I am very confident about it.

Sandeul: The accompaniment song of Chu Chu Chu is also good. The song title is how we express our feelings of the song in Korean. Please listen to it with the feelings of a lover singing it to his other half.

Gongchan: Ready To Go is an original song sung in Japanese. The lyrics talk about having hope and working hard. I hope you listen to it with the thought of our Japanese activities.

CNU: Bling Girl is a song made by Jinyoung, and describes the dugeun dugeun feelings during a confession.

Jinyoung: We want to become a group that will receive the love from Japanese fans as we show you the music of B1A4.

All: We’ll work hard so please cheer for us!

120702 B1A4, SEEKING AN EXPLANATION FROM JUNG JINYOUNG

NEWS ARTICLE 2012. 7. 2. 18:40

◆ As it turns out, B1A4 are bad boys?

Reporter: The main character of ‘Sleep Well Good Night’ are bad boys right? Any chance it’s a personal experience?

Jinyoung: No, it’s not my personal experience. (laugh) It’s not an experience, but you know when I make a song I personally record the guide track. The original lyrics had ‘sleep well, good night. I’ll be dancing, dancing, dancing in the moonlight”. I started to think about the possible situations. I always make my songs with my imagination. This has absolutely never happened in real life before. (laugh)

Sandeul: Jinyoung hyung has a lot of imaginations. His imaginative power is awesome.

Jinyoung: The stories in movies and dramas are always the same, so I wanted a new story that was not overused.

Sandeul: But the melody, unlike the lyrics, is very sweet.

Jinyoung: As a guy, he should always send a girl off to bed sweetly, not forcefully.

Baro: The lyrics of ‘Sleep Well, Good Night’ are really interesting. But as we sing, it starts getting chaotic. Since the melody is so sweet, unknowningly my expressions come out really brightly. It is significant as the lyrics express how a guy comes out after putting his girlfriend to see… But if you watch the music video, there is a reversal within the reversal. On places like Youtube, there are overseas fans who upload reaction videos of them watching our music video. I watched some of them, and all their reactions were the same. Their expressions got weird upon watching the last scene. I don’t think they understood.

Reporter: Could it be because they didn’t understand the lyrics?

Baro: Ah… That could be it too. But you would tend to understand it upon watching it for the second time.

Reporter: CNU’s eyes when turning the female dancer around her waist on stage are particularly impressive.

CNU: I’ve never had such an experience before, so that glare was difficult to do. (laugh) Are the lyrics of a bad influence? Honestly, it could be that the guy is not heading to meet another girl, but just to have some fun. It can refer to the guy not having fun with the girl, and would rather spend time with his friends.

Reporter: Shall we listen to what the original composer meant?

Jinyoung: That’s what happens when you nitpick over the finer details of the song. It didn’t have to be about the guy going to meet another woman. But since it was that concept

for the music video, there have been many different interpretations. (laugh) The main purpose… was to break away from daily life. (smirk)

◆ Demanding an explanation from leader Jung Jinyoung

Baro: It was like this for ‘Because of You’ too. Whenever hyung makes a song, he creates a very confused atmosphere. The feel of the song is entirely different on the lyrics. Hyung likes his reversals too much. I wrote the rap with CNU hyung, but it was really difficult to write the lyrics. When writing raps, we just have to follow the feel. But it was so hard to put our emotions into writing the rap. The lyrics go ‘it’s alright, but thinking about having to eat alone, it’s not alright’. Lamenting to a girl ‘I’m like this’, with a split personality.

Jinyoung: Look, the reason why I do so… It is true that I do like twists to my songs. It’s like how there is no charm to a rough-looking character being very strong. Same thing goes for cute-looking people only being cute. The song may be very dark, but when the feel is brighter, it hits closer to home. If you listen to only the melody of ‘Because of You’ it does sound like a confession song. But once you know more, it’s actually about a broken relationship.

CNU: The fans said that it’s because we have the ‘reversal-charm’. (laugh)

Baro: I hope he can continue being this hard-working.

Sandeul: From the singer’s point of view, this point (of reversals) is easy. If the lyrics are dark just like its melody, the emotion load comes easier. Now that it’s the direct opposite, I’m having a mental breakdown.

CNU: What are you talking about?

Sandeul: This is what I mean by ‘thinking to myself makes me think deeper”. That’s why I think the reversals are good.

CNU: Jinyoung requested us to express the calm yet painful situation of a break-up. I thought very hard about it. As Sandeul said, it would have been easy to write sad lyrics with a sad melody. It is really difficult to write sad lyrics with a upbeat melody.

Baro: Hyung made many requests on how we should sing the song, and how the rap should be written, yet it was somehow vague. The lyrics were not very hard to write yet it took us a few days. Jinyoung hyung said, “The melody is really sweet right? But when you listen to it, ‘it’s all because of you.’ It’ll be nice if you express the realistic situation of a breakup.” But it was my share of work to capture the concept accurately, and the sweet mood totally killed it. That’s why it took a few days.

Jinyoung: I have something to say too. ‘Because of You’ was written in a minor chord. It is a chord that nothing else but a sad melody could have come out, so it would have been easily written. But I don’t like it to be easy and obvious. If there was a reversal to the melody, it comes out differently. It’s not a given for a bright melody to have dark lyrics. When I thought about it, I felt that such ‘reversed’ songs would be special. Break-ups may not just be bad things. For example, you have to work but you just cannot stop crying. But when you think about it, you can sing about it too, right? As you live your everyday life, you may start to think about that girl as you are using your computer.

Sandeul: Amongst all of hyung’s songs, ‘Baby I’m Sorry’ was the hardest. You have to sing it happily, but the lyrics give you a mental breakdown. The song starts in a minor chord then proceeds into a major chord. Wah…

Jinyoung: Are you going to send the girl off badly? You have to break up with her coolly. Are you going to hold onto her and not let her go? You have to let her go coolly, while smiling.

Sandeul: Well, I do not think about such twists. Maybe it’s because hyung would coolly send her off.

CNU: But to be exact, ‘Baby I’m Sorry’ doesn’t really talk about sending the girl away coolly. He holds her back twice. If you look at my part near the end, I shout for her to ‘not go’.

Jinyoung: About that… You will still think about the girlfriend as you play around while trying to forget it. Even when you play, when you are playing, you’re not really playing. If you think about it, my songs all have a story to it. The lyrics of ‘dancing party time’ seems really out of the blue, but it may happen. The lyrics goes ‘don’t go, don’t go’, then ‘I’m dancing to forget you’, but after dancing, ‘this won’t do, please don’t go. I can’t take it anymore’.

Sandeul: He’s an amazing person.

Baro: He already has the stories all in his mind.

Sandeul: His brain capacity is all filled up. He is a smart person.

CNU: It’s our song, but I really think they’re really good. There is definitely a charm to ‘reversed’ songs.

Baro: Usually singers say that they do not really listen to their own songs right? But I really listen to our songs often. I was running on the trackmill and I wanted to listen to ‘Baby I’m Sorry’, so I put that on repeat for 10 times.

CNU: I’m sorry to say this myself, but our songs are really attractive. (laugh)

Sandeul: I thought that hyung was a weird person, the first time he let me listen to a song that he just wrote. I was about to sleep but he let me listen to it. What does he think while living.

Jinyoung: Honestly, I worried a lot while I write songs. I wondered if I expressed the reversal well. Before we record, we create a story and imagine it together. Hence the individual members have been able to express the song well in the recording sutdio. I’m thankful that the members sang my songs well. (laugh)

Baro: I nearly cried, after listening to ‘Baby I’m Sorry’. (laugh)

Reporter: And the time is up. Shall we end it up coolly?

B1A4: Fans! I love you!

The three-part interview with B1A4 has ended. B1A4 successfully ended their ‘Sleep Well Good Night’ promotions in Korea, and is starting on their Japan promotions. They have debuted with the Japanese version of ‘Beautiful Target’, charting 4th on the Oricon Charts and given the green light to conquer Japan. We hope for super rookie B1A4′s success in conquering not only Korea, but Japan and Asia and even larger markets. Let’s fly, B1A4!

MAGAZINE/JAPANESE 2012. 6. 25. 18:33

★ Beautiful Target is a song that gives you strength

- You debuted in Korea last year in April, and after a year you’ve decided on your Japanese debut. Do you think it’s fast?
CNU: I’m not sure how it is like for the other artistes but I feel that it’s not too fast, not too slow. It’s a good timing?
Baro: We did not have the urge to hurry with our debut in Japan, but to be able to debut in Japan makes us happy, because we could allow more people to listen to the music we like too.

- Who have you spoken to about regarding your Japanese debut?
Jinyoung: …Because we’re been so busy, I haven’t spoken to anyone about it yet (laugh). But my family and friends will probably find out from the news articles.
Gongchan: We shared our happiness amongst ourselves.
CNU: That’s why we don’t know how the reaction is like around us.
All: Ahahahaha (laugh).

- Your debut song is the Japanese version of your Korean title song Beautiful Target. Is there anything you’ve newly discovered during recording?
Baro: It was easier to record as compared to before.
Jinyoung: Even though it was so when I sang, I discovered the effectiveness of the song during the music video shoot. We were really tired when the filming continued through the night…
Members: That’s right. So tired~
Jinyoung: But the song wakes you up immediately! So I felt once again, ah.. It’s a famous song. It’s an enjoyable song.
CNU: Your strength just rises.
Baro: When we filmed for the original Korean music video, there were parts in our dance, gestures and expressions that we were not satisfied with. But after dancing a lot to it during our Korean promotions, and practicing the Japanese version a lot during recording.. We feel more carefree in expressing our emotions in our second round of promotions, as compared to the first.
Sandeul: You’ll never get sick of this song~

- Is the Japanese language difficult?
Jinyoung: Almost half of the lyrics to Beautiful Target is in English. So it was not as difficult as we expected.
CNU: We also practiced our pronounciations a lot. In the Japanese language, when you get a tone wrong the entire meaning changes. I put a little more effort in that part.
Baro: There weren’t much troubles in my rap too. But it was a little hard to match the rhymes? We studied Japanese hard!
Jinyoung: We are attending Japanese language classes, and whenever we have time we memorize vocabulary.

- The recording of your other song Bling Girl was directed by Jinyoung, right?
Jinyoung: Yes! We spent 9 hours recording it. The members helped out and the recording went perfectly. The atmosphere was good, so the people recording feel good too.
CNU: Bling Girl is also a song that you can gain strength from after listening to it. We who sing it gain strength too!
Jinyoung: Whenever we record, the members will each obtain a topic and challenge to clear it. It all comes out on the song. I think we matured a lot in this point.
CNU: When we’re all done singing, we listen to it at once together. It is very realistic, as we listen to each other’s voices and say things like, “Ah, you’ve improved here~”.

★ Secrets of how the members have changed?
- So from now on, we’ll be carrying on the solo photoshoots… Please talk about how he (the person not present) has changed after debut, and how he has not changed. (laugh) Starting with Baro?
Gongchan: During OK days, he was like a child but starting from Baby I’m Sorry he became manly! Recently when I look at Baro hyung’s pictures I feel that he is handsome.
Jinyoung: He has matured a lot with regards to his thoughts. He has been reading books often lately, so his vocabulary has increased too. He’s working hard at self-development.
Sandeul: Baro does really well at self-management, he does it consistently.
CNU: In the waiting rooms of music broadcasts, the other members would be asleep from fatigue but he’d be reading a book. I feel that he’s working really hard.

- Who is always sleeping?
Sandeul: ……..(Chooses CNU with his finger)
CNU: I don’t always do so (laugh).

- How has leader Jinyoung changed?
CNU: He has not changed with regards to how he works hard when composing music. Even during our busy promotional period, he’d be composing through the night despite being sleepy. That side to him is extremely cool.
Gongchan: He is a man who does not know of giving up. He does something until it reaches perfection. Whenever we record, he keeps getting us to repeat in order to improve the quality of our vocals. That’s why he has the nickname of “also”. (Pointing to Sandeul) He is the victim of the “also/as well” attack, having to leave and wait. We keep hearing Jinyoung say “it’s good now but do this also”.
Sandeul: Yes… I am always in the recording booth (in a small voice). Ah! Jinyoung hyung just looked at me. Scary! Jinyoung hyung has matured and grown more handsome as the days pass… as well (laugh).
Gongchan: Also… We keep hearing it so it’s stuck to our lips (laugh).
Sandeul: Also (laugh). Jinyoung hyung keeps on doing aegyo these days as well.
Gongchan: If we’re talking about recently, isn’t it Sandeul hyung?
Baro: Because Gongchan is the youngest, he has much aegyo. But in Sandeul’s case, rather than aegyo…
Gongchan & Baro: You’d want to strangle him? (laugh)

- Jinyoung has returned and CNU has left. Please talk about CNU next.
Gongchan: CNU hyung has not changed a single bit since the past. He’s always slow (laugh). When we’re done with practice and we all leave by car, only CNU hyung doesn’t come out. If we had to talk about what he does instead… He checks if all the lights are switched off, since he is the mother (laugh).
Jinyoung: He has changed in the way that he doesn’t waste his efforts by challenging himself to improve and he works harder than ever.
Baro: And as compared to when we first debut, he jokes around less. Maybe he’s busy, or tired but he no longer jokes around with me, he’s gotten tired of me. At those times I get Sandeul to play with me (laugh).
Sandeul: Despite being sleepy (laugh).

- How about the youngest, Gongchan?
Jinyoung: After turning 20, he has matured and now has clear ideas on what to do to be better. He’ll be a dongsaeng who will turn out good. He has not changed in the way that he still does aegyo to us? Our maknae will be our maknae forever, so I hope that him doing aegyo to us doesn’t change too.
Baro: He hasn’t changed in his ability to calmly access a situation.
CNU: Rather than being calm, there is something you can look forward to? (laugh)
Jinyoung: He is a child who breaks with a snap.

- And lastly, Sandeul?
Jinyoung: His appetite has not changed (laugh). He has changed in the way that he is able to tell the members about his challenges in life after we debut. As the main vocal, there are many troubles that he holds to himself regarding singing. But that is a good change. To have many troubles means that you develop faster.
Baro: His passion for singing has not changed. It has in fact increased! I think it has changed slightly from the past; after we started living together, the connection by music has molded Sandeul’s personality into a much brighter one.
Gongchan: His face and body have become cooler. Before debut he wore spectacles so it was a little tacky, but just him removing his spectacles he’s become much cooler. Also, after he ends his dieting carried out during our promotional period, he gains the weight back. It’s possible to gain the weight lost from self-management (laugh).

- Please say a sentence each about your feelings about your approaching Japanese debut.
Jinyoung: More than being tense, we are nervous. We have worked hard for our Japanese debut. We want to hurry meet everyone, and stand on the stage soon.
Baro: My heart goes dugeun dugeun at the thought of the Japanese debut. I can’t fall asleep!
CNU: I miss everyone, to the extent of wanting to go on a date together. Please cheer for us!

120622 ZIPPER MAGAZINE AUGUST 2012

MAGAZINE/JAPANESE 2012. 6. 22. 18:31

★ Congratulations on your Japanese debut! Please talk about how you feel right now!

CNU: I’m really happy! I’m really excited to be able to sing on stage and show the Japanese fans our performance.

Sandeul: I’m looking forward to standing on a Japanese stage. I’m nervous!

Baro: I’m looking forward too, but I do feel some pressure. We will have to show everyone a more matured and hardworking side to us.

Jinyoung: The start is always difficult, especially having to match the lyrics with the beat.

Baro: It is my first time making a rap in Japanese, and it was hard to think of words that rhymed.

Gongchan: However, this is a song that has been showing people in Korea our unique color. When you are tired, this song will really give you strength so I hope that everyone in Japan will listen to it too.

★ The origin of ‘B1A4′ is from your blood types?

CNU: Yes! We have 1 member with blood type B and 4 members with blood type A. There is also the meaning of Be the one. All for one. (Becoming the best only when 5 becomes 1).

Jinyoung: In Korea, they say that there are personalities that come with your blood type.. It’s something like reading your fortune in Japan? (laugh)

★ In Japan, we have the blood type personalities too, even though blood type As and Bs are so-so to each other (laugh). B1A4 seems to have a good relationship.

Baro: I think it’s okay because I’m the only blood type B. (laugh)

★ Ahaha (laugh). So! If the five of you were a family, what characters would you take on?

CNU: I always hear that I play the role of the mother (laugh).

Jinyoung: For example, when we are heading out CNU would ask if we turned off the gas, or whether we locked the door. And he is also good at cleaning up!

Baro: Jinyoung hyung is in the position of the father. He is very reliable, and is the type to stand in front of the members to lead us on. When he is encouraging us, or gets angry, we definitely have to be careful.

CNU: Gongchan is the youngest child. But he is the maknae who may break anytime. He is actually the eldest (in his family) so he is very quick at noticing things.

Jinyoung: I’m always leaving my things all over the place, so they often get lost. But Gongchan always brings them back to me. I call that ‘Gongchan’s miracle’. (laugh)

★ How about the remaining two?

Baro, Sandeul: We are the mischievious son #1 and son #2.

Baro: Let’s decide on who is #1 and who is #2.

Sandeul: My birthday comes first so I’m obviously #1.

Baro: Tsk, got it…

Jinyoung: They always fool around like this, giving us a lot of laughter. Their existence is like vitamins that give strength to the members.

★ Your relationship is very good~ So lastly, please tell us what do you think is a ‘good man’!

Jinyoung: An attentive man.

CNU: A man who knows how to love a girl.

Baro: A man who only loves that one girl in his life.

Gongchan: A man who fulfils whatever is given to him to his best effort.

Sandeul: Ah! I become last! What do I do.. Nothing comes to mind! A man who is attentive, knows how to love, only loves one girl, and does his best at everything.

Members: He’s just concluding it up for us (laugh).

120622 B1A4: BARO AND HIS TEAR-FILLED EXAM LUNCHBOX (PART TWO)

NEWS ARTICLE 2012. 6. 22. 16:36

◆ Don't make Baro cry

Baro: When the members wrote me a letter around the time I took my entrace exams, I nearly cried.

Sandeul: Wow really?

Baro: That's how important letters are. I don't write letters for nothing.

Sandeul: I got it. I'll write one with a brush and give it to you.

Baro: I nearly cried when the hyungs packed me a lunchbox. But an exam is an exam. Sandeul hadn't changed his address yet so he took his entrance exams in Busan. I was totally envious that he was going to get a lunchbox packed by his parents. I was really lonely. I didn't study so it was obvious I wasn't going to do well. I didn't think that the hyungs would pack food for me, but when I woke up the lunchbox was there. In that moment I was totally not envious of Sandeul, and my shoulders were filled with strength (laughs).

Jinyoung, CNU: (Fatherly smiles)

Baro: I was going to take the subway, but our manager hyung said he would fetch me there. I had already made plans to meet a friend at the subway station so I said I would just go myself. Halfway through the exams during lunch, I opened up the lunchbox to find a heart shape made of beans. It was tuna fried rice, with various side dishes. It hadn't been long since I transferred schools so I didn't have many friends and I ate lunch alone.

Sandeul: Aigo, our squirrel!

Baro: But I had a lunchbox filled with love so I was not lonely at all.

Sandeul: I didn't give much thoughts to the entrance exams. Well I didn't study as well (laughs). I spent lunchtime exploring the school happily. I didn't have many friends either.

Baro: The 4 of us, excluding Jinyoung, took our entrance exams last year, after we debuted. You know how they release a list of idols taking their entrance exams every year. My name wasn't on the list, so I was quite upset. Sandeul, CNU hyung and Channie even did interviews in front of the exam venue, and took photos too.

Jinyoung: Even I did it.

Baro: I felt the loneliness from 2 years ago. I had already debuted so it would have been nice to be recognized, but no one knew. You know how all the boys take their exams together. Even the people who were at the entrance cheering their friends on did not recognize me. I entered the school thinking "it can't be that not even one person here watches music broadcasts right", but none of them watched it.

Sandeul: It was the same for us too!

Gongchan: No one recognized us.

Reporter: That can't be true...

Baro: The fans asked me why didnt I take my entrance exams...

◆B1A4, an animal kingdom?

Reporter: All of you have nicknames right? Do you like them?

Baro: Me! Me!

Reporter: Yes, squirrel please talk.

Baro: Ah... I like my nickname of 'squirrel'. But I hope I get a new nickname. I really had many people call me a squirrel because of my front teeth. Because I like soccer, I had the nickname Cha Du-ri, Cha Dolbak-ee, Cha Dol-ee. But now a year has passed since our debut so I would like a more mature nickname. Rather than cute, I want to be called cool.

Members: Wildcat, Eurasian red squirrel, otter...

Gongchan: Mine's puppy. Puppy.

Jinyoung: We call him a puppy because his eyes are so bright and he resembles a Shih-Tzu too. If he ties up his fringe the resemblance is even more. When we were trainees, he would tie up his fringe and he looked totally like a Shih-tzu.

Gongchan: There's also Krong-chan.

Sandeul: That's why I highly recommended dinosaur. We went to watch Jurassic Park 3D in the movie theatres, without Channie. I remember taking a photo of the dinosaur opening their mouths wide and uploading that on Twitter. Totally the same as when Channie yawns.

Gongchan: Now I want to hear people call me a man.

Sandeul: Dobermann. [T/N: A breed of dog, and wordplay on man.]

Baro: Shepherds. Or an even stronger dog.

Gongchan: Up until now I have heard people call me a puppy, a baby. From now onwards I hope to hear people tell me I've matured, and that I'm a man.

CNU: For me, bear, and noona. It's a nickname I've had since I was in school, because I look like one and act like one. My friend save my contact number in their phones as Shinbear.

Sandeul: When he's lying down he asks us to pull him up. He's like Pooh. You know how bears are slow but when they need to be fast they are really fast. When he's happy or feeling good he's super fast. For example, when we go and eat something delicious?

CNU: I'm satisfied with my nickname of bear. I don't like the nickname noona, but of course it's not bad.

Jinyoung: He's really quite pretty when he pins up his hair though.

CNU: What are you talking about.

Jinyoung: For me, an arctic fox.

Sandeul: I get those 'good-looking young man' vibes from hyung. My nickname is duck! But when I was in middle school, my nickname was Jung-fan - shortened from 'Junghwan is reading fantasy novels'. There was once I was so into reading fantasy novels that I read the entire series in one go. For a long time after, my friends called me Jung-fan. My teacher called me 'mole'. Until middle school I had a huge mole, so my teacher would go, 'Hey, mole!'. It would be nice if I had a unique nickname.

Jinyoung: The nickname duck was given by me. There was once I made him run an errand for me, to buy some Welsh onions. He looked totally like the Pokemon Farfetch'd. [T/N: 파오리 in Korean - literally Welsh onion + duck] Since then I've called him a duck.

Sandeul: I want to have a more unique nickname.

Members: A mallard?

Sandeul: That's just so-so. A natural monument? I want to be a rare animal.

Members: Platypus.

Sandeul: Oh it's grey in color so I like it (laughs).

CNU: Sandeul is really good at swimming. Baro called him a platypus after seeing it.

Sandeul: But the platypus has a huge tummy so I don't like it.

120621 B1A4: SANDEUL AND VICTORIA'S SECRET (PART ONE)

NEWS ARTICLE 2012. 6. 21. 16:32

If they were to choose the president these days, many young girls would be choosing this group. The name of this idol group may be a little strange to the older generation, it is B1A4. Their group name is formed from the basis that 1 member has blood type B and 4 members with blood type A. There are often misunderstandings, with people referring to them as B1F4 because of drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’, or the size of paper A4. But there is no mistake that these boys are the hottest rookies who have been making young girls laugh and cry in 2012.

A year ago, these five boys were amazed by the sight outside the closed windows of our interview room in Hongik University. But now they have transformed into bad boys who wink while “leaving a text message of ‘sleep well darling, see you tomorrow’”, and saying that they will “be back tomorrow, so even if I don’t reply, I’m late or if you hate me, please ignore it and move on”. But what can we do, they are the bad boys we canot hate.

Cute but manly at the same time, serious yet mischievous, quiet yet there is occasional chattering. We have prepared this for the people who have yet to fall into B1A4′s charms. It is the reconstruction of B1A4′s interview. We’ve reconstructed the hilarious and fresh interview as much as we could. What if it was the automated voice support? Congratulations. We offer the chance for the young fans to speak comfortably with their oppas, and the noona/aunt fans the chance to call them oppa. Only 10 seconds each. Of course, this has not been agreed upon with B1A4, so it’ll be a problem if you say that you saw it in an article. We recommend that you talk to them about the photographs in the repackage album THE B1A4 I IGNITION SPECIAL EDITION. Then you would not have to worry about ‘브이텍’ (slang where people use it in the situation where your heartbeat is increasing yet there is not enough blood).

◆ What exactly is Victoria’s Secret?

Reporter: Sandeul, shall we talk about Victoria’s Secret?

Sandeul: Ah… (The expression of what they call a ‘mental breakdown’)

Members: Wahaha!

Sandeul: I downloaded the video of Victoria’s Secret runway show. When I was searching for Justin Timberlake on the Internet, there were many search results of him performing ‘Sexy Back’ during the Victoria’s Secret show. I felt that ‘Sleep Well Good Night’ needed the slightly seductive feeling on stage so we were supposed to show sexy eyes. I searched for Chris Brown(‘s performances) and that performance as well, but I didn’t expect the reaction to be so huge ㅠㅠ We did a livestream chat via AfreecaTV with the fans at night, just like a video call with my computer.

Jinyoung: I think I’m the culprit. Firstly, I’m sorry. We were carrying out the chatting on AfreecaTV well all the way till the end. I didn’t know how to end the chat properly so I just turned off the camera and the desktop wallpaper ended up showing (on the chat). The video showed up on the desktop, and the fans took a screenshot. We thought that ending the chat meant just switching off the camera but suddenly Channie goes “hyung! The desktop wallpaper is showing”. We thought it was an error and only we could see it (laugh). But the fans saw it all.

Sandeul: I thought to myself, ‘just exactly what is Victoria’s Secret?’ I watched the video and saw that it was just a fashion show. But after that when I searched on the Internet, it was something similar to Maxim in our country.

Baro: Isn’t it an underwear brand?

Reporter: That’s right.

Sandeul: Eh????? Really????? Seriously??????

Baro: Black Eyed Peas have ever stood on that stage before. I thought it was just a performance stage as well.

Gongchan: You said you want to do it too?

Baro: It is a stage everyone would want to challenge for once in their life.

Sandeul: Oh, I think that Justin Timberlake is really amazing. The video title was “Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Justin Timberlake Sexy Back”. Since the title was so long it was truncated to only “Victoria’s Secret” on my desktop.

Baro: That’s why I changed the name of the video.

Sandeul: Ah….

Baro: I have several too. Yah, we have to change the names of all the videos. I have Usher‘s too…

Sandeul: Ah seriously! I really got misunderstood. My desktop had Shinchan The Movie and Naruto videos too ㅠㅠ I’m a man who watches Shinchan. But I haven’t been able to watch it too.

Baro: I worried a lot alone. Going “eh?!” at my iPad, I couldn’t even fall asleep.

Gongchan: He was totally serious about it, alone in the middle of the night.

Jinyoung: Totally made a fuss about it.

Sandeul: It was funny at first, but it got worrisome eventually.

Baro: I didn’t even know how to explain it. I did think that after releasing the stress by performing on music shows I should talk about it but he(Sandeul) had already written a post about it. Seriously…

Sandeul: Hey, not you too *&^%$$#!$^&*()

Jinyoung: A couple days ago we cleaned up the house. We were happy after cleaning up the house but such things just had to happen (laugh). Whenever we clean the house, something like this always happens.

Gongchan: Isn’t this the first time?

CNU: Exactly.

Jinyoung: Is that so?

◆ Sandeul’s mental breakdown caused by Victoria’s Secret, and the aftermath

Reporter: But these days, Sandeul has been preparing for the musical ‘Brothers Were Brave’ right?

Sandeul: I play the character of the younger brother Joobong, but the scripts include lines like ‘fella’ and ‘I’m talking to hyung but I feel like a fool’. Unknowningly when I speak I become more rough too. I often ask myself who am I living us.

Reporter: How does it feel to carry out interviews without the members?

Sandeul: On the day we reveal our (musical) practice room, I did an interview. I then understood the importance of the members. I felt it too harshly. As expected, I felt that B1A4 is one.

Members: Puahaha!

Reporter: As for the other members, what do you want to do? For example, if you had a holiday?

Baro: When we are promoting, we should focus on promotions.

Members: Er…

Baro: The weather recently has been really nice so I want to go to places like Hawaii or Gaum, keke. Europe is nice too. Basically I just want to travel to a place with sunshine. Not long ago we went to Han River to catch some fresh air, but only me and Jinyoung hyung got off the car. Han River should be visited at night, because in the day it is so hot. We made some time to visit but it was not satisfying.

CNU: I didn’t get off the car. I was just watching from the back mirror, but I could feel the wind as I ate ice cream.

Baro: In any case, Han River should be visited at night. There are so many people (visiting) in the summer.

Sandeul: What do you do that?

Baro: Just feel the wind.

Sandeul: Ah…

120620 韓FUN MAGAZINE VOLUME 58

MAGAZINE/JAPANESE 2012. 6. 20. 17:24

★ Goal of achieving first on the Oricon charts

- Your Japanese debut on 27 June is approaching soon, leader Jinyoung please tell us about your feelings now!

Jinyoung: We are working hard for our debut. Rather than being nervous, we are more excited. We want to hurry meet the Japanese fans, and stand on the stage.

- Your goal is to achieve first on the Oricon charts, right?

Jinyoung: We believe that if we work hard enough, we can achieve our goals.

- It is the ‘nothing is impossible’ mindset. Moving on, ‘Beautiful Target’ was a hit in Korea last year. Please tell the Japanese fans more about the song!

Sandeul: It is a fresh and youthful song. When you are down, I feel that it will make your mind clear. When you listen to it feeling happy, you’ll enjoy it even more. You will be able to hear various sound effects like gunshots, a female screaming and rocket sounds.

- The lyrics speak of a man falling for a beautiful lady at first sight. What are your beautiful targets like? What would you do if they appear?

Gongchan: A girl who is usually very calm, but in front of only me has much aegyo! If such a girl appears, I’ll take my time and express my feelings to her slowly.

Baro: For me, a girl who speaks and communicates well with me. But if such a girl appears, I will not just simply confess to her. I am the type who would wait till I gather up the courage to confess.

CNU: A kind person who cares and looks after me like a mother. A girl who understands me well. But I will not be able to approach her quickly, I am the type who would watch and look for a chance (to confess).

(Jinyoung starts smiling and nodding)

- Oh? Jinyoung, is that someone who comes to mind?

CNU: No, the five of us have been together ever since our trainee days, there is no time for us to find a girl we like.

- Your youth days must have been busy. What is Jinyoung’s type of girl then?

Jinyoung: Hmm, I don’t have a specific type based on appearance. I like people based on their first impressions. The style I like differs at different timings. If I really find a girl whom I like, I most likely will approach her actively and personally.

Sandeul: If I find a girl whom I like, I try to get closer to her. I’ll then actively confess to her. The type of girl I like depends on situations, but I like girls who like me.

- There are many of you looking for girls who like them. So, when you held your fanclub inauguration event in Tokyo in April, you guys showed a unique ‘sprout dance’ move during your performance of Beautiful Target. It’s become a topic, this dance that asks you to hold your hands above your head while locking your hips and moving your legs!!

Gongchan: The ‘sprout dance’ was created by Baro hyung while fooling around! It’s a dance that introduces us as sprouts, and asks for everyone to look after us in the future.

- Hey~ Baro has a strong genius rapper image, yet he managed to come up with a dance! In the Japanese version of ‘Beautiful Target’, Baro has to rap in Japanese. Was it hard?

Baro: Even though we took Japanese lessons prior to recording, it was really difficult. Due to the different words, the rhythm was different. But it was a really fresh experience. The lyrics had the same meanings as the Korean version, so it was less difficult than expected. And honestly speaking, my rap parts had many English words so I didn’t suffer that much at all.

Jinyoung: Baro has a strong obsession about rap. As much as he worries about the rap, he has managed to establish his own rap. His rap is charming because no matter how many times you hear it it doesn’t get boring, it’s unique and interesting.

- Jinyoung, you also composed ‘Bling Girl’ right? Do you create your songs as you play the piano?

Jinyoung: I don’t use specific instruments (to compose). I composed ever since before debut, and I’ve been composing using a synthesizer connected to the computer. From the computer, I am able to choose various instruments such as the drum.

- ‘Bling Girl’ is a self-composed song?

Jinyoung: At that time, I couldn’t come up with the chords. Hence I started by creating the melody, and then inserted the chords. I’m currently studying more about making chords. There are some regrettable parts (in Bling Girl), but I feel that it is a song that represented all that I felt before we debuted.

- It is a song that is jammed with Jinyoung’s thoughts then. In the normal edition of the Japanese album, there is an original song ‘Ready to Go’ included. How did you all study Japanese?

CNU: We’ve been learning from a Japanese teacher who comes to teach us at the company. Even though there hasn’t been much time recently, we’re still working hard.

- There is a handshake session on 30 June and a commemoration event on 1 July. You can show off your improved Japanese to the fans then!

Sandeul: So far our lives in Japan have received passionate support. You can’t even feel the difference from the Korean lives.

- What words from the fans make you happy?

Jinyoung: I feel happy to hear them say I’m charming.

Gongchan: “I’ll always be cheering for you!”

Baro: Hmm, nothing comes to mind.. Ah! I know! “Today you guys were the best! The best! The best!”

Sandeul: During the fanclub inauguration event in April, I introduced myself as something that would taste better the more you chew. I was very touched when the fans cheered me on by saying “Octopus, fighting!”

CNU: What could it be for me?

Gongchan: For CNU hyung it would be “you’re so cool!”.

CNU: That’s right! I feel happy when I hear that (laugh)

★ When all the schedules have ended, exchange of ideas during a reflection session

- What does everyone talk about when you return to your dormitory after your schedules?

CNU: Everyone is really talkative so we talk a lot. It’s hard to name just one. We discuss work, and put a lot of thoughts into what we’ve done well and what we need to change about our performances. Recently a topic has been about the music we don’t like.

- You are really passionate about your work. What about your meals?

CNU: I often cook. Kimchi fried rice, ddeokbokki… Recently we’ve been busy so I haven’t cooked much. But back in our trainee days, we had a roster to make breakfast for all five members.

Gongchan: (CNU hyung’s) kimchi fried rice is really delicious but.. I’m not so sure about his ddeokbokki.. (laugh) But CNU hyung grills samgyupsal really well.

- The member with a weird habit?

Baro: I’ll talk about this! I want to say that the three members (excluding Gongchan) are really bad at cleaning up. They don’t bother about the smaller pieces of rubbish. It’ll be nice if you did a little more cleaning up.

(Jinyoung, CNU and Sandeul smile bitterly)

- Baro is the only member with blood type B in B1A4. I think there are many things that the remaining 4 members with blood type A want to talk about as well. As the popularity of B1A4 increases, there have been solo activities planned out as well. CNU had his first acting challenge in spring with sitcom I Need A Fairy as a high school student with a dream to be a singer. How was it?

CNU: I have always wanted to try acting in a drama, but because it’s a totally different thing from being a singer so it was hard. Initially I was so nervous, but I enjoyed it eventually thanks to the opinions the members gave me, and the nice treatment from the senior actors.

Sandeul: I couldn’t imagine that the CNU hyung I was seeing in the drama was the same CNU hyung that I knew.

CNU: That’s right. I think the members were embarrassed to see the scenes I came out in. But in the end they told me that they got used to it (seeing me on the drama).

- You will start to get busier after your debut on 27 June. Please tell us about your goals for this year.

Jinyoung: We want to get a rookie award in Japan.

Gongchan: I want to achieve first place on the daily charts.

Jinyoung: Oh? That’s not it.

Gongchan: Ah! I got it wrong. I want to achieve first place on the weekly charts. And I want to achieve first place on the monthly charts as well.

Sandeul: I don’t know if I’m thinking too far ahead, but it’ll be nice if there were people cheering for us anywhere we go. I want to tell people about us.

CNU: I want to hold a B1A4 solo concert. A concert name that includes B1A4!

Baro: I want to lose 5kg, and make defined abs.

Sandeul: I want to have abs too.

- Both of you are having a competition then.

Baro: I ate too much meat yesterday, so it starts now.

Sandeul: The opponent is impossible (to beat). (laugh)

Gongchan: CNU hyung has many outfits that are sleeveless so he is always doing pushups.

- We look forward to how B1A4 will continue to grow. Please end it off with a word to the Japanese fans!

Gongchan: Everyone, please just wait a little longer! We are going to Japan soon to meet everyone, so please cheer for us and give us a lot of love!
