120702 B1A4, SEEKING AN EXPLANATION FROM JUNG JINYOUNG

NEWS ARTICLE 2012. 7. 2. 18:40

◆ As it turns out, B1A4 are bad boys?

Reporter: The main character of ‘Sleep Well Good Night’ are bad boys right? Any chance it’s a personal experience?

Jinyoung: No, it’s not my personal experience. (laugh) It’s not an experience, but you know when I make a song I personally record the guide track. The original lyrics had ‘sleep well, good night. I’ll be dancing, dancing, dancing in the moonlight”. I started to think about the possible situations. I always make my songs with my imagination. This has absolutely never happened in real life before. (laugh)

Sandeul: Jinyoung hyung has a lot of imaginations. His imaginative power is awesome.

Jinyoung: The stories in movies and dramas are always the same, so I wanted a new story that was not overused.

Sandeul: But the melody, unlike the lyrics, is very sweet.

Jinyoung: As a guy, he should always send a girl off to bed sweetly, not forcefully.

Baro: The lyrics of ‘Sleep Well, Good Night’ are really interesting. But as we sing, it starts getting chaotic. Since the melody is so sweet, unknowningly my expressions come out really brightly. It is significant as the lyrics express how a guy comes out after putting his girlfriend to see… But if you watch the music video, there is a reversal within the reversal. On places like Youtube, there are overseas fans who upload reaction videos of them watching our music video. I watched some of them, and all their reactions were the same. Their expressions got weird upon watching the last scene. I don’t think they understood.

Reporter: Could it be because they didn’t understand the lyrics?

Baro: Ah… That could be it too. But you would tend to understand it upon watching it for the second time.

Reporter: CNU’s eyes when turning the female dancer around her waist on stage are particularly impressive.

CNU: I’ve never had such an experience before, so that glare was difficult to do. (laugh) Are the lyrics of a bad influence? Honestly, it could be that the guy is not heading to meet another girl, but just to have some fun. It can refer to the guy not having fun with the girl, and would rather spend time with his friends.

Reporter: Shall we listen to what the original composer meant?

Jinyoung: That’s what happens when you nitpick over the finer details of the song. It didn’t have to be about the guy going to meet another woman. But since it was that concept

for the music video, there have been many different interpretations. (laugh) The main purpose… was to break away from daily life. (smirk)

◆ Demanding an explanation from leader Jung Jinyoung

Baro: It was like this for ‘Because of You’ too. Whenever hyung makes a song, he creates a very confused atmosphere. The feel of the song is entirely different on the lyrics. Hyung likes his reversals too much. I wrote the rap with CNU hyung, but it was really difficult to write the lyrics. When writing raps, we just have to follow the feel. But it was so hard to put our emotions into writing the rap. The lyrics go ‘it’s alright, but thinking about having to eat alone, it’s not alright’. Lamenting to a girl ‘I’m like this’, with a split personality.

Jinyoung: Look, the reason why I do so… It is true that I do like twists to my songs. It’s like how there is no charm to a rough-looking character being very strong. Same thing goes for cute-looking people only being cute. The song may be very dark, but when the feel is brighter, it hits closer to home. If you listen to only the melody of ‘Because of You’ it does sound like a confession song. But once you know more, it’s actually about a broken relationship.

CNU: The fans said that it’s because we have the ‘reversal-charm’. (laugh)

Baro: I hope he can continue being this hard-working.

Sandeul: From the singer’s point of view, this point (of reversals) is easy. If the lyrics are dark just like its melody, the emotion load comes easier. Now that it’s the direct opposite, I’m having a mental breakdown.

CNU: What are you talking about?

Sandeul: This is what I mean by ‘thinking to myself makes me think deeper”. That’s why I think the reversals are good.

CNU: Jinyoung requested us to express the calm yet painful situation of a break-up. I thought very hard about it. As Sandeul said, it would have been easy to write sad lyrics with a sad melody. It is really difficult to write sad lyrics with a upbeat melody.

Baro: Hyung made many requests on how we should sing the song, and how the rap should be written, yet it was somehow vague. The lyrics were not very hard to write yet it took us a few days. Jinyoung hyung said, “The melody is really sweet right? But when you listen to it, ‘it’s all because of you.’ It’ll be nice if you express the realistic situation of a breakup.” But it was my share of work to capture the concept accurately, and the sweet mood totally killed it. That’s why it took a few days.

Jinyoung: I have something to say too. ‘Because of You’ was written in a minor chord. It is a chord that nothing else but a sad melody could have come out, so it would have been easily written. But I don’t like it to be easy and obvious. If there was a reversal to the melody, it comes out differently. It’s not a given for a bright melody to have dark lyrics. When I thought about it, I felt that such ‘reversed’ songs would be special. Break-ups may not just be bad things. For example, you have to work but you just cannot stop crying. But when you think about it, you can sing about it too, right? As you live your everyday life, you may start to think about that girl as you are using your computer.

Sandeul: Amongst all of hyung’s songs, ‘Baby I’m Sorry’ was the hardest. You have to sing it happily, but the lyrics give you a mental breakdown. The song starts in a minor chord then proceeds into a major chord. Wah…

Jinyoung: Are you going to send the girl off badly? You have to break up with her coolly. Are you going to hold onto her and not let her go? You have to let her go coolly, while smiling.

Sandeul: Well, I do not think about such twists. Maybe it’s because hyung would coolly send her off.

CNU: But to be exact, ‘Baby I’m Sorry’ doesn’t really talk about sending the girl away coolly. He holds her back twice. If you look at my part near the end, I shout for her to ‘not go’.

Jinyoung: About that… You will still think about the girlfriend as you play around while trying to forget it. Even when you play, when you are playing, you’re not really playing. If you think about it, my songs all have a story to it. The lyrics of ‘dancing party time’ seems really out of the blue, but it may happen. The lyrics goes ‘don’t go, don’t go’, then ‘I’m dancing to forget you’, but after dancing, ‘this won’t do, please don’t go. I can’t take it anymore’.

Sandeul: He’s an amazing person.

Baro: He already has the stories all in his mind.

Sandeul: His brain capacity is all filled up. He is a smart person.

CNU: It’s our song, but I really think they’re really good. There is definitely a charm to ‘reversed’ songs.

Baro: Usually singers say that they do not really listen to their own songs right? But I really listen to our songs often. I was running on the trackmill and I wanted to listen to ‘Baby I’m Sorry’, so I put that on repeat for 10 times.

CNU: I’m sorry to say this myself, but our songs are really attractive. (laugh)

Sandeul: I thought that hyung was a weird person, the first time he let me listen to a song that he just wrote. I was about to sleep but he let me listen to it. What does he think while living.

Jinyoung: Honestly, I worried a lot while I write songs. I wondered if I expressed the reversal well. Before we record, we create a story and imagine it together. Hence the individual members have been able to express the song well in the recording sutdio. I’m thankful that the members sang my songs well. (laugh)

Baro: I nearly cried, after listening to ‘Baby I’m Sorry’. (laugh)

Reporter: And the time is up. Shall we end it up coolly?

B1A4: Fans! I love you!
